VIDEO: Framingham Veterans Bring Flag To NH School Where McAuliffe Taught

Teacher who lost her life in the Challenger disaster 30 years ago is honored with a flag ceremony, 73 moments of silence.

CONCORD, NH - Teachers, faculty and some students at Concord High School took a moment to honor the life of former CHS teacher Christa McAuliffe, who lost her life in the Challenger space shuttle disaster 30 years ago today.

Veterans from Framingham, came to Concord to fly a flag in her honor, one that has also been flown at Cape Canaveral, the U.S. Capitol, and in Framingham, at McAuliffe’s former high school. It will also be flown at Framingham State College, her alma mater, and will eventually fly permanently at a library named for her in Framingham.

The flag was flown at the school after being brought up from Framingham earlier today. Those in attendance took 73 moments of silence – the span of time between liftoff of the Challenger and when it exploded – on Jan. 28, 1986.

Kim Belier-Wood, a teacher at Concord High, stated that the community wanted to host an event in her honor. The American Women’s Studies class, curriculum that McAuliffe brought to Concord High, held a roundtable discussion about her legacy. All students also watched a short documentary and filled out stars featuring their own dreams that now adorn the inside of the school.
