2. This day in Malden History: Aug. 1, 1885 - The engineer of the 5 o’clock Boston/Maine railroad train discovered the body of a man with his head crushed. A New Hampshire man later confessed to the murder, saying the victim, Patrick Connors of Haverhill, threw sand at him while the two passed each other on the tracks. In response, the killer beat Connors over the head with a railroad iron.
