Cafe For Outdoor Lovers No Longer Coming To Malden

Landsmith Cafe and Outdoor Adventure Clubhouse planned to open at the J Malden Center, but the cost has become "insurmountable."

MALDEN, MA — A cafe catering to outdoor lovers will no longer open in Malden. Union Square Donuts co-founder Heather Schmidt, who planned to open Landsmith Cafe and Outdoor Adventure Clubhouse at the J Malden Center, said last weekend the project has been scrapped, Eater Boston reported.

"Due to rising unexpected build-out costs that became insurmountable, the debt burden would have been unsustainable for the business to carry," Schmidt wrote in an Instagram post.

Schmidt had hoped the cafe would also serve as a hub for classes and outdoor programs. In her post, she wrote that she will take the concept "back to the place it started – nature, being in the outdoors, and connecting with the community."

Schmidt hinted that the concept isn't done and urged the cafe's Instagram followers to check back for updates in the coming months.

Schmidt launched a Kickstarter campaign last February to help pay for the design and buildout of Landsmith, which eyed space at the J Malden Center at 190 Pleasant St. Bit Bar, the Salem bar and restaurant stocked with retro pinball and arcade games, also plans to open a second location at the mixed-use development.
