MALDEN, MA — Changes to Malden's "Pay As You Throw" trash and recycling pickup program will be implemented in April.

Residents will receive two bins, one for recycling and one for trash. They can choose to continue to use the city-issued blue bags in those bins or pay an annual fee for the entire barrel, allowing them to place other types of trash bags inside.

Mayor Gary Christenson told the Advocate last fall the system is designed to give households the opportunity to save money on waste disposal. In a flat-rate system, a two-family home would pay $400 annually for pickup, but "we heard from many residents who currently can limit their trash production where they are spending 25 percent of that," Christenson said.
