Update: Hanover Street Fire Caused by Lit Cigarette

Update: Firefighters are saying the "careless disposal" of a cigarette caused the Thursday morning fire. 

"Fortunately for the occupants, their smoke detectors activated and alerted first floor residents to the fire, and the mother and children were able to escape the blaze," Deputy Fire Chief Leonard Dunn wrote in an e-mail. 

Dunn encouraged residents to regularly check their smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

Malden Firefighters responded to a report of smoke showing from a home at 34 Hanover St. this morning. 

Firefighters were called around 10:30 a.m. and had the fire knocked down in about twenty minutes. 

The fire was discovered on the first floor of a 2.5 story wood home. 

No information was immediately available about potential victims in the blaze, but we'll update the story when we receive official confirmation.
