Flags at Half-Staff on Sept. 11 in Malden

The city of Malden has lowered their American flags to half-staff Wednesday in observance of the lives lost in the terrorists' attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

"In observance of the September 11 , 2001 tragedies, the Malden Fire Department hung their big flag out on the engine over Salem Street," said Kathleen Manning Hall, administrative officer for the city, in an email to Malden Patch Wednesday. "At 8:46 this morning, the time Flight 11 struck the first tower, they struck a special signal on the bells and tower: 5-5-5-5  which signifies the death of a firefighter in New York. They also made an announcement, and observed a moment of silence in memory of the lost souls in New York, (Washington) D.C. and the Pentagon."

The city also posted this message on their Facebook page: "Join us as we remember the day that changed us forever. Let us reflect on those we lost, those who continue to heal and on those who are serving in the military to protect our freedom. May we never forget the true American spirit of patriotism, unity and the resolve to stand together as a nation."
