MALDEN, MA — Malden Director of Human Services & Community Outreach Karen Colón Hayes is throwing her hat in the ring for councilor-at-large. Hayes, who moved to Malden with her husband 30 years ago, said she "instantly felt at home" and has been involved in and out of city government for 15 years.

"We were drawn to Malden's rich diversity, historic parks and accessible public transportation," Hayes said in a statement. "We are proud to have raised our three girls through the Malden Public School System."

With her husband Pat, Hayes founded FOOGI, Friends of Oak Grove, Inc. She has also led initiatives to help seniors and find summer job opportunities for local youths and helped found The Warming Center to address homelessness.

"Our city is facing unprecedented times - health, financial and racial crises," Hayes said. "Countless neighbors have lost their jobs because of an unstable economy. Food insecurity is at an all-time high and many are facing evictions. These times call for strong, bold and courageous leaders who think out of the box. Leaders who have relationships with our neighbors, our business owners and community organizations. Leaders who aren’t afraid to take on challenges and make tough decisions that will move our city forward. Most importantly, leaders who listen to and act on the voices in our community."

Hayes said Malden's local government struggles to reflect the diversity of the community. She is running to "build a stronger Malden that encompasses new opportunities for our community, schools and economy."
