MALDEN, MA — The following letter was submitted by Ari Taylor, candidate for City Council in Ward 5.

Growing up, Roosevelt Park was my park! I attended 4th of July celebrations there, summer
carnivals there, went to cheerleading practices there and spent many days on the swings with
friends. I have such wonderful childhood memories at Roosevelt Park.

In the past few years there has been a lot of talk about what is to become of Roosevelt Park.
Some might even call it the great “Turf vs. Grass Dilemma”. Many residents continually speak out
against turf; and, I believe that certainly outweighs those who have supported turf.

My question is why turf? The reasons and comments that boomerang back do not compel me to
agree that turf is what is needed. It allows for a quick fix, but is not a realistic long-term solution.
The mitigation of contaminated soil is disproportionate with many safety concerns. One huge
complaint I have heard is that our elected officials, from the beginning, did not communicate to
our community; especially our Salemwood School community. They are the most impacted!

Residents do not feel heard and there lies the problem.

As candidate for Malden City Council in Ward 5, I believe representation must include all of our
community at the table. Working together yields great solutions; and one that would certainly be
better than what we have now ~ “Turf vs. Grass Dilemma”.

Isn’t it time for a change?
