Malden-Bred Filmmaker Explores Depravity of New York Sports Fans
The gut-wrenching "27 The Movie" depicts the bleakness and self-deluded desperation of New York sports fans.
Thursday, filmmaker and former Malden resident Dino Brogna tossed his award winning short film, “27 The Movie,” online,, free for all with 30 spare minutes on their hands.
In the quickie movie, cousins Tony (Damon Pampolina) and Carmine (Dave Maldonado) reluctantly agree to meet for dinner at a fancy Italian restaurant, despite years of mutual animosity. Tony is a sophisticated, well-mannered Bostonian with excellent personal hygiene, emblematic of the typical Red Sox fan. Carmine is an unemployable, overweight, obnoxious lout with terrible bowel problems, and therefore a symbol for all Yankees fans.
Out of nostalgia for their childhood friendship, Tony uses reason and logic in an attempt to lure Carmine away from the soul-annihilating abyss of rooting for New York sports teams. Serendipitously, Tony finds an ally in his quest - Angela, the waitress (Candice Barley) - but will their combined efforts be enough to save Carmine from himself? Or will Carmine drag them down with him, into the bottomless pit of Yankee-loving madness?
