MALDEN, MA — Det. Sgt. Peter Mitchell wondered: was he getting too close to this case?

This one was personal. He was hot on the trail of a thief with a penchant for "Magic." The crook had struck close to home: Hobby Bunker, a joint Mitchell frequented.

It was a whodunit with few leads. A smashed front door. "Magic: The Gathering" cards missing.
