Malden Man Struggles With State Troopers in Highway Traffic

All are safe after a Malden man allegedly declared he "wanted to end his life and take some troopers with him" during a reportedly dangerous struggle on a state highway in Millbury Friday night. 

Barry Jean-Baptiste, 26, was allegedly uncooperative when stopped by police around 10:30 p.m. on Route 146. Police said he produced what appeared to be a fake ID and a rental car agreement that was nearly two weeks expired. 

Asked to stop out of the car, a patdown allegedly revealed the man had a small knife in his possession. 

As police began searching his car, Jean-Baptiste allegedly ran into traffic and declared suicidal intentions to the officers. 

An officer was reportedly nearly hit by a tractor trailer in the ensuing struggle to return Jean-Baptiste to the breakdown lane. At one point, he attempted to jump off the side of a nearby off-ramp. 

After the arrest, a search of Jean-Baptiste's vehicle allegedly yielded a 40 caliber handgun, an ounce of marijuana with evidence of drug distribution and more than $2,000 cash. 

He faces numerous charges, including the alleged unlawful possession of a firearm without a permit, possession of a high capacity firearm, operating with a suspended license, five counts of assault and battery on a police officer, possession with intent to distribute a class D substance, resisting arrest, threasts and "numerous" motor vehicle violations. 

Jean-Baptiste was held over the weekend and faced arraignment in Worcester District Court Monday.
