Malden Restaurants Won't Have To Pay To Renew Liquor Licenses

The Licensing Board voted this week to waive 2021 fees, citing the economic toll of the COVID-19 pandemic on license holders.

MALDEN, MA — The Licensing Board voted Oct. 27 to waive 2021 renewal fees for Section 12 licenses, which regulate the sale of alcohol at dining establishments. The vote was unanimous, as the Board cited the economic toll of the COVID-19 pandemic on license holders.

"The positives are that our restaurants have shown an amazing resilience," Mayor Gary Christenson wrote in a letter of support to the Board. "I believe that as we start to build optimism there may be light at the end of the tunnel, there is some assistance that we as a City can give such as reducing some of their costs of doing business."

The City Council voted Oct. 8 to authorize a one-time reduction in renewal fees in 2021 due to the impact of the pandemic. The Licensing Board opted to waive the fee altogether.
