Malden to Host Activities for National Fire Prevention Week

Malden Domino’s Pizza and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) are teaming up with the Malden Fire Department to promote fire prevention this week, according to a press statement.

From 3–6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 9, customers who order a Domino's pizza may be randomly selected and greeted at the door when their pizza arrives in a fire engine, according to the statement. If all smoke detectors are functioning properly, the pizza is free, and if a smoke alarm is not working firefighters will replace the batteries and make sure it is fully functional, the statement adds.

“Fire safety is vitally important,” said David Jenks, franchise owner of Domino’s Pizza in Malden, in the statement. “We are thrilled to work with the NFPA and the fire department on a program to promote the safety of our friends and neighbors and to reward those who make fire safety a priority.”

“Functioning smoke alarms save lives, but many people forget to maintain the batteries,” added Leonard Dunn, deputy fire chief at Malden Fire Department, in the statement. “We are excited to be working with Domino’s Pizza to promote good fire safety precautions by rewarding residents who have properly installed and functioning smoke alarms with a free, delicious pizza.”

City Celebrates National Fire Prevention Week

The City of Malden will be holding a series of open houses the week of Oct. 6-12 in honor of National Fire Prevention Week, according to a city press statement.

Fire Prevention Week is observed in October in remembrance of the Great Chicago Fire that began on Oct. 8, 1871 and killed more than 250 people, along with destroying more than 17,400 structures across 2,000 acres, according to the statement.

In 1911, 40 years after the Chicago blaze, the Fire Marshals Association determined that the anniversary of that fire should be observed annually to create awareness about fire prevention, according to the statement. Fire Prevention Week has been observed since 1922, the statement adds.

"Families are encouraged to attend and participate and learn the best ways to prevent fires and keep their homes safe," reads the statement.

Pizza will be served to children, and coloring books, fire helmets and fire safety brochures printed in four languages will be handed out, according to the statement.

Open houses will be held at the following locations from 5-7 p.m.:

• Monday, Oct. 7 at Fire Station 4, 5 Overlook Dr., Revere  

• Tuesday, Oct. 8 at Fire Station 1, 1 Sprague St.

• Wednesday, Oct. 9 at Fire Station 3, 332 Pleasant St.

On Thursday, Oct. 10 from 12-1 p.m., Malden firefighters will be at City Hall Plaza to give Jaws of Life and other fire safety equipment demonstrations, according to the statement.
