Malden Woman Fatally Hit By Car ID'd

MALDEN, MA — Authorities have identified the woman fatally hit by a car in Malden Monday afternoon.

Athena Hartwell, 86, was walking on Hunting Street when a black Toyota RAV4 crashed through the front of an auto body shop and traveled across the street, striking her, the Middlesex District Attorney's office said.

Hartwell, a resident of a nearby elderly housing facility, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the RAV4, a 28-year-old Malden man, has been cited for operation of a motor vehicle with a suspended license.

The driver remained at the scene of the crash and was taken to an area hospital, authorities said. His name is not being released at this time.
