Malden Woman Sentenced For Embezzling Social Security From Bank

Feds: While working at Eastern Bank, Materesa Jose stole more than $27,000 from an account belonging to a person who died in 2015.

MALDEN, MA — A Malden woman was sentenced Wednesday for stealing Social Security benefits and embezzling more than $27,000 from a bank while she was an employee, federal authorities said.

Materesa Jose, 53, was given time served – one day in prison – and three years of supervised release. She was also ordered to pay $27,605 in restitution.

While an employee of Eastern Bank, Jose stole approximately $27,605 between September 2017 and July 2018, the U.S. Attorney's office said. The majority of the stolen funds consisted of Social Security benefits from an account that belonged to a person who died in 2015, federal authorities said.

Jose pleaded guilty to one count of theft of public funds and one count of bank embezzlement in February.
