July 31, 1951: Voters rejected a pay hike for teachers during a special election in May of that year, ultimately prompting 12 Malden taxpayers to file a lawsuit on July 31 calling the vote “invalid and of no legal effect.”
July 31, 1975: The MBTA votes to drop their “dime time” program, which offered a reduced fare of only ten cents during peak hours (compared to the off-peak twenty-five cent fare). The authority also votes to charge a staggering 50 cents for rides to and from Malden Center, though the station is not completed until later that year.
