Police: Multiple Overnight Car Break-ins in Malden

Multiple car break-ins occurred Monday night into Tuesday morning in the Gilbert and Willard Streets area, according to Malden Police Chief Kevin Molis.

Police have received at least two reports of breaking and entering into vehicles on Willard Street and one on Gilbert Street, according to Molis. He noted that the suspect(s) likely gained access to the vehicles because they were left unlocked, as there have been no reports of damage or forced entry.

"When we look at the patterns of (breaking and entering) into motor vehicles, one of the things we do look at many times is is the vehicle locked or unlocked," Molis said, "and we do find that locking your car and making sure there are no valuables in it is a very good thing for the public to do to deter or prevent themselves from being victims of crime."

The types of items stolen from the vehicles included a GPS unit, iPhone charger and loose change, according to Molis. The police chief reiterated the importance of not leaving items a thief might consider valuable in plain view inside a vehicle, saying it's best to simply remove the items from the vehicle.

Police continue to investigate the car break-ins, but as of noon on Thursday no arrests had been made.
