Popular Revere Beach Ice Cream Shop Closes
Banana Boat shut down Tuesday after 43 years at Revere Beach.
REVERE, MA — A popular seaside ice cream shop has closed after decades at Revere Beach. Banana Boat announced its closure Tuesday, with a statement from the shop saying in part:
"It is with a heavy heart we have made the tough decision to close Banana Boat Ice Cream. Words will never be enough to express our gratitude to our family, hard-working employees, dedicated customers, suppliers, and each person who has supported us over the years."
The property was bought in 1977 by the Schena and Fanara families, who saw it as an investment opportunity amid rumors a casino was coming to Revere Beach. Though the casino never came to fruition, Tony and Ann Schena held on to the building and turned it into Banana Boat.

"Tony Schena built it like a fortress which has proven resilient through major storms like the Blizzard of '78 and other unforeseen challenges like COVID-19," the statement continued. "The flags that hang atop the building and off the back of Ann's World-Famous Banana Boat represent the generations of family who have served."
The shop was known for seasonal treats such as soft serve ice cream, banana splits, frappes, sundaes and more, and was a favorite among Revere first responders.

"Thank you to the Revere Police and Revere Fire Departments who have not only been loyal customers but have come to our rescue on many occasions and made us feel safe in our city," the owners said.
