How Late is Too Late? Proposed 7-Eleven Tabled by Planning Board

The Planning Board tabled a proposal to bring a 7-Eleven convenience store to the Dockside Riverside building Wednesday night, after two councillors raised concerns about its hours of operation. 

Councillor Peg Crowe said she was pleased that the long vacant storefront could see some business, but said there was “no need” for a 24-hour facility.

She was joined by Ward 2 Councillor Steven Ultrino, who expressed similar reservations.

“The businesses in the area would like a place they can grab a cup of coffee, water, soda, paper etc in the area they can walk to,” Crowe wrote on Malden Patch Wednesday. “...(but) there is no need (in my estimation) for 24 hours. Extended hours maybe, but 24 hours?”

While a bit far to walk, a 24-hour Walgreens is only a mile from the store's proposed location at Medford and Commercial Streets.

The Board's decision won't end the plans outright: Representatives will reportedly work with neighbors to address residents' concerns, with plans to again come before the Planning Board in the near future.
