Man Struck On Route 1 In Saugus, Police Searching For Driver

Police are asking for help identifying the driver who drove off after hitting a person on Route 1 Wednesday morning.

The victim, a 24-year-old man from Gloucester, was brought to Massachusetts General Hospital with serious injuries.

State Police said he was struck around 10:17 a.m. on Route 1 South. The man was working at an area business when he stepped into the road to get a barrel that blew over.

Police said the driver did not stop and continued on to Route 99.

A procession for a fallen soldier from Arlington will pass through town Thursday morning. Chief Warrant Officer 2 Marwan S. Ghabour was one of five U.S. Army soldiers who died in a helicopter crash in Egypt Nov. 12.

Ghabour grew up in Arlington and graduated from Arlington High School in 2010. He was a member of the soccer and wrestling teams and worked as a high school intern for ACMi, Arlington's local access television station.

Pot Shop Finds Unlikely Partner: A WWII Hero Who's Never Smoked

"I never smoked in my life," Marvin Gilmore says with a chuckle. Gilmore's sitting in a conference room at Western Front, Chelsea's first cannabis dispensary, where he serves on the Board of Managers. The irony isn't lost on him.

"If I [smoked] I wouldn't be sitting here today at 96 years old," he says.

Marijuana is the latest front in Gilmore's lifelong fight for justice. The grandson of slaves, Gilmore left school at 17 to fight in World War II. He returned a highly decorated war hero, but instead of reverence, he was greeted with hostility.

Rep. Katherine Clark Elected Assistant Speaker Of The House

U.S. Rep Katherine Clark was elected by her fellow Democratic House members to the position of assistant speaker, elevating her to one of the highest leadership posts in Congress.

Clark was elected, 135-92, in a remote vote Wednesday. She was vying for the spot against U.S. Rep David Cicilline of Rhode Island.

Clark, of Melrose, is already the second-highest ranking in the House. Now she's the fourth-highest ranking member overall.

Third Suspect In Wakefield Shooting ID'd

A Norwood man has been arrested in connection with a September shooting in Wakefield, the Middlesex District Attorney's office said. Shemar Nelms, 18, faces charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury, assault and battery with a firearm, carrying a firearm without a license, carrying a loaded firearm without a license and possession of a large capacity firearm.

Nelms was arrested Tuesday night at his mother's home. He was arraigned Wednesday in Malden District Court.
