School Committee Approves Budget
The Malden School Committee increased the budget, but it remains slightly lower than the state's recommended budget.

The Malden School Committee approved a 2014 fiscal year budget 5.5 percent higher than that of 2013 at a meeting earlier this week.Â
The approved budget for the fiscal year is $59,238,328. Salaries have increased 7 percent between the two years and make up about 79 percent of the total budget for 2014.

However, Massachusetts recommends that Malden spends $80,424,387 toward its schools this year. Malden’s total net school spending comes to $77,737,913, about $2.5 million under the recommended foundation budget.Â
At a June 3 meeting where a budget report was presented, Superintendent of Schools David DeRousi said Malden schools continue to function under a net school deficit.
No employees have been laid off.Â
