'Suspicious Packages' at MHS, Malden Center

Police responded to at least two reports of suspicious packages in Malden yesterday - one at Malden High School and another by the tracks of the Orange Line near Charles Street.

Police responded to at least two reports of suspicious packages in the city Tuesday - one at Malden High School and another near the Malden Center T station. 

Police closed Salem Street for about 15 minutes around 9:30 a.m. as they contained the scene near the high school. 

"Someone called in a suspicious package - a small briefcase atop a trash barrel," Capt. John Amirault of the Malden Police Department wrote in an e-mail. "Briefcase found empty; problem over."

The package near Malden Center was discovered around 5 p.m. Tuesday, and resulted in some rush hour shuttle transfers for Orange Line commuters traveling north of Wellington Station. 

Police quickly discovered the reported duffel bag contained only a hooded sweatshirt.

Though no actual devices were discovered, police continue to encourage residents to report anything suspicious in the aftermath of Monday's attack in Boston.
