City Apologizes to Parents, Students About School Opening

"Sometimes you get it right, other times not," the City's Facebook account announced Friday afternoon. What did you think of their decision? Did you keep your kids home or send them to school?

After much outcry from parents and (not too surprisingly) students after not canceling school Friday, the mayor's office took to their Facebook account to apologize.

"Sometimes you get it right, other times not. We got it wrong and we want to apologize to students and families of Malden Public Schools," the update read.

The account, normally updated by Director of Online Services and Communication Technology Ron Cochran, said the city often relies on the DPW's weather forecast, which typically provides more accurate local information than the "broad strokes" provided by TV meteorologists.

"We do also take in to account reports from Massachusetts Emergency Management," Cochran wrote. "We factor it all in and try and make a unified determination. Again, we got it wrong this time."

"Two weeks (ago) the Mayor of Everett called a snow emergency and our DPW director called all rain," Cochran added. "We got it right, they got it wrong. The result, restaurants in Everett closed, Malden thrived. It happens."
