MILTON, MA — Milton police are urging residents mailing personal checks or cash to mail them inside post offices, or use newer mailboxes with a slender mail slot, after several reports of having mail stolen out of mailboxes in recent weeks.

Police said they investigated multiple reports of checks being fished out of a USPS mailbox or taken from a residential mailbox. Police said the payee and/or amount of the check was changed and the suspects then attempted to cash them.

Police said that residential mailboxes were targeted twice when an outgoing letter was placed in the mailbox and subsequently stolen.
