Milton Police Warn Residents Of Ransom Scam

Police said victims are contacted and told their computer was hacked, and personal information will be distributed unless a ransom is paid.

MILTON, MA — Milton police are warning residents about a scam where potential victims are contacted and told their computer has been hacked, then told personal information will be distributed unless a ransom is paid.

Milton police said that since the first week of April the department has taken at least four reports of town residents being contacted with the attempted fraud scheme. The people claiming to be hackers tell victims the only way the information will not be released will be if they transfer an amount — usually more than $1,000 — in Bitcoin.

Milton police urge residents not to respond to any threats of his nature, not to transfer money, and then contact a family member, friend or the police to help determine the legitimacy of anyone contacting them for money.
