Four-Year Bridge Project On I-495 Gets Going

MassDOT will do most of the work in Haverhill overnight to avoid miles-long backups.

NORTH ANDOVER, MA -- Get ready, Merrimack Valley drivers. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation begins work Tuesday night on a four-year project to replace the bridge that spans the Merrimack River between exits 48 and 49 on Interstate 495 in Haverhill. Most of the work will take place between 7 pm and 5 pm, and MassDOT plans to keep three lanes in both directions open during peak travel hours.

The bridge has been the site of several emergency repairs in recent years, with holes opening up on the span. Those repairs have frequently led to hours-long traffic backups.
