North Andover Warns Of Utility Company Scam

Scammers claim to be the utility company and threaten to immediately shut off service if they do not receive payment.

NORTH ANDOVER, MA — North Andover warned Wednesday of a new utility company scam in a news alert.

In this scheme, scammers claim to be from National Grid and demand payment.

According to a NBC10 report, one victim of the scam received a call that spoofed National Grid's phone number and used her exact account number and balance.

The scammer said National Grid was on their way to disconnect her electric and gas service.

"The woman admitted she panicked and used the Zelle app through her bank, which allows customers to send money quickly for free," the town said. "The woman transferred nearly $800 dollars before realizing she was targeted by scammers."

The town noted that the company doe snot threaten immediate shut-off and is actually not terminating service at all to residential customers during the pandemic.
