Time Running Out For Red Sox To Sign North Andover Star
The Red Sox would need to offer an estimated $1 million or more to convince Sebastian Keane to skip college.
NORTH ANDOVER, MA — The Boston Red Sox have until 5 p.m. Friday to sign their 11th-round draft pick in last month's Major League Baseball draft. Sebastian Keane, who led North Andover to a Super 8 championship, started classes at Northeastern University last week. A few days later, he started playing for the North Shore Navigators in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League. Keane, who was named Massachusetts Gatorade Player of the Year, toured Fenway Park with his family and met several team officials, including pitching consultant Pedro Martinez.
According to the Eagle-Tribune, which first reported this story, the Red Sox would likely have to offer Keane a contract of more than $1 million to get him to bypass college. The team only has an estimated $900,000 in its signing pool.
