Founders Day Returning to Norton

This year expected to be bigger than the last.

Founders Day is coming back to Norton for its second year, and 2013 Norton Founders Day Annual Picnic & Fireworks Committee co chair Bill Lippincott says this year is going to be another blast.

“It was about a year ago that I was here to announce the first-annual Founders Day and now we’re going to do it again,” he said. “Things are going very well and are in line.”

Founders Day, started last year, is a celebration of all things Norton and will be held on June 22. It includes a picnic, fireworks, a petting zoo, local music and more.  The event is scheduled for 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Lippincott said the town’s favorite last year was the blueberry pie-eating contest.

“I see a lot of smiles over there,” he said, indicating the Norton Board of Selectmen. “We have some potential contestants apparently.”

He added the event has added a sac race and a whiffle ball tournament for this year, as well as tug of war.

“We haven’t planned that one out yet,” he said. “It could be the police department against the fire, I just don’t know right now.”

Lippincott said this year they are expecting over 3,500 people from the local area to attend.

“We think we may have that same number from Norton and the surrounding communities,” he said. “We’re proud to be a member of the tri town community. The great town of Norton has community pride.”

Selectmen said they were looking forward to the event, and are eagerly awaiting festivities.

“I would like to congratulate you and your volunteers,” said selectman Timothy Giblin.

The rain date for Founders Day is scheduled Jun 29.
