Gambling Establishments Could Have Effect on Norton
Norton selectmen looking for impact studies on all three proposed nearby facilities.

Norton could be facing a triple threat for gambling establishments.
The Norton Board of Selectmen discussed the possibility of the approval of the Plainridge Racecourse in Plainville, the Taunton Casino and the Raynham Racecourse getting approval from the Massachusetts Gaming Commission for slots and/or full casino status respectively.
“We have three different facilities being proposed in the area,” said selectmen chair Robert Kimball. “What kind of impact will that have on Norton?”

Kimball said the MGC currently has regulations in place that would allow the towns to request funds for an impact study from any nearby gaming establishment, of which Norton is considered one for all three. He said Plainridge, for instance, already has $50,000 set aside for any nearby towns to do impact studies.
Kimball said he doesn’t feel one establishment by itself would affect Norton too much.

“Personally I don’t think Plainridge will have much impact on Norton,” he said. “I think 495 will have a small impact but I don’t think it’s a big deal.”
Kimball said though the ancilloary affects, such as water, sewer, housing and the additional burden to the schools from additional housing could present the town with a problem.
“Housing is a big factor,” said selectman Timothy Giblin. “We have a lot of 40bs (affordable housing developments) that are ready. Those things could fill up those 40bs instantly, which is a major impact on this town.”
