RAYNHAM, MA — A Taunton man died on Friday morning trying to help a car that had just been in an accident on Route 495 in Raynham. State police identified the good samaritan as Luis Contreras, 37 — he was hit by a car when he tried to cross the road to help a car that had just hit a deer.

Just before 1 a.m. a family driving South on Route 495 hit a deer near the Route 104 underpass and was stuck in the middle lane. A 44-year-old man from Chesapeake, Va was driving and two other adults and a seven-year-old boy were also in the car. Contreras saw the car stuck in the road and pulled over to help the driver and passengers.

While Contreras crossed the road, he was hit by a car driven by a 21-year-old Rockland man. He was pronounced dead at the scene by State Police. The driver stayed at the scene. None of the passengers or drivers of the other two cars were injured.
