Norwood Marijuana Company's Recreation App To Be Reviewed

Beacon Compassion Center received approval for application reviewed by the Cannabis Control Commission.

NORWOOD, MA — A Norwood medical marijuana company is hoping to get a piece of the recreational business as well.

Beacon Compassion Center, which has an office at 900 Washington St., was one of 20 companies to receive approval for application reviewed by the Cannabis Control Commission on an expedited basis .

The regulatory body on Tuesday agreed to prioritize the review of those 20 applicants and said the companies will be able to apply for a recreational marijuana business license in one week. The details of who those businesses were weren't available for much of Tuesday.

The commission approved all 20 with one vote. The 20 applicants approved Tuesday and any others approved for priority certification will be able to submit their marijuana license applications beginning April 17, though the CCC cannot issue licenses until June 1.

Under "operational and registration status," all companies are listed as having "obtained provisional certificate of registration only."

Priority certification -- which will allow those entities approved to leapfrog towards the front of the line when the CCC begins issuing licenses -- is open to registered marijuana dispensaries (RMDs) and those eligible through the CCC's economic empowerment program, which is intended to assist people disproportionately affected by marijuana prohibition.

Beacon Compassion Center was founded as a medical marijuana dispensary. While the town has banned marijuana businesses, the company can be certified but they cannot seek a license in Norwood.
