St. Catherine of Siena School Students Win at MSEF

Six out of 8 students from Saint Catherine of Siena School won top prizes in the 22nd Annual Massachusetts Science & Engineering Fair

Six out of 8 students from Saint Catherine of Siena School won top prizes in the 22nd Annual Massachusetts Science & Engineering Fair (MSEF) at Worcester Technological High School last week. This year’s event, sponsored by the Cabot Corporation, hosted 301 independent research projects from schools across the state with awards and medals given to selected students for their outstanding, “best of the best” science projects.

At the Region 5 Science, in preparation for the statewide fair on April 6, all eight students received the Broadcom Masters Award which qualified them for statewide competition and the designation “Students Rising in Math, Applied Science, Teachnology and Engineering."

Melissa Colella – 1st Place – Extracting Chlorophyll

Niall Powers Ozyurt – 2nd Place – Helpful Hydrogen

Rebecca Jeneia – 2nd Place – Daphnia

Michael King – 3rd Place – Waste Not, Want Not

Vishal Velavan – Honorable Mention – Hydrogen Electricity

Sam Gonser – Honorable Mention – Battery vs. Thermal Energy Challenge

Two other students were named Broadcom Master Students at the Region 5 Science Fair:

Bren Joshua Cueco – 1st Place

Thomas Nee – 2nd Place

The Broadcom Master Students Program is sponsored by the Society for Science and the Public. The work of Broadcom Master Students is shared nationally to encourage others to further add to their research.

A major component of Saint Catherine’s approach to science instruction in Grades 6 – 8 is the requirement that every middle school student conducts and presents a science project.
