Citywide Cleanup Coming To Peabody

After social media distress over state of downtown litter, the city said it will have its annual cleanup on April 17.

PEABODY, MA — While the melting snow and ice was a welcome occurrence for Peabody residents looking for signs of spring after a cold, dark winter of pandemic restrictions, it did reveal there is some work to do in order to spruce up the city a bit for those long-sought outdoor aesthetics.

A video posted on social media of a trash-strewn downtown prompted a small community group to organize a trash pickup day downtown this upcoming weekend.

The city also said on Monday that it will hold its annual community-wide cleanup day on April 17 at 9:30 a.m. starting at City Hall.

Residents, civic organizations, businesses and nonprofits are invited to clear trash from parks, lakes, ponds, bike paths, main streets and any litter that remains downtown.

"It has been a long pandemic year and the City is in need of a good spring cleaning,” Mayor Ted Bettencourt said. "The Peabody Spring Cleanup is a great occasion to get together with family, friends, neighbors, co-workers and teammates and do something positive and constructive towards making our City a better place to live."
