Extreme Drought Swallowing Up State: MA Weather Forecast

Seventeen percent of Massachusetts is in an Extreme Drought, and 92 percent is in some sort of drought. No real end is in sight.

The Extreme Drought plaguing our hot, dry summer has expanded. Seventeen percent of Massachusetts is now experiencing Extreme Drought conditions, up from 4 percent last week. Nearly all of Essex County and all of Suffolk County are shriveled up under the drought, along with most of Middlesex, much of Norfolk, and a touch of Plymouth. Central Massachusetts is in a Severe Drought. But it doesn't stop there.

Ninety-two percent of the Bay State is in some form of a drought (at least Abnormally Dry, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor), while the majority is under at least a Severe Drought.

Last week was the first time an Extreme Drought was called in Massachusetts.

The dryness has even crept up into Southern New Hampshire, where 4 percent of the Granite State is under an Extreme Drought.

When is it going to end? Monday morning could be the next time we see some rain, according to NECN meteorologist Aaron Perry. After that, the following weekend might be our next chance for rain.
