Obituary: Herminia M. Marques, French Teacher

Graduate studies at L'Universite de Laval in Quebec, Canada, and at L'Universite D'Avignon, France.

Herminia M. Marques 77, of Tannery Gardens, Peabody died on Sunday, May 31, 2015 after being stricken at her home.

Miss Marques was born in Peabody on September 5, 1937 to the late Manuel and Herminia (Henriques) Marques. She was a graduate of Emmanuel College in Boston with majors in French and Spanish, and did graduate studies at L’Universite de Laval in Quebec, Canada, and in France at L’Universite D’Avignon.

Miss Marques was a French teacher for many years in the Medford Public Schools at the Elementary, Middle School and Senior High School levels. She was a member of the American Association of Teachers of French and the Modern Foreign Language Association.

Miss Marques was a very active parishioner of Our Lady of Fatima Church, Peabody for her entire life, having served as a Parish Council member for 3 years, as well as a CCD Teacher and Publicity Agent for the Church for several years. Up until the time of her death she was a Lector at the Church as well as a Eucharistic Minister. She also did volunteer work at several Nursing Homes where she visited the sick on a weekly basis, and also spent much time knitting, including for charity.

Herminia leaves a brother and his wife, Rodrigo and Elizabeth “Betty” Marques of OH; seven nieces and nephews and their spouses, Dr. Suzanne Marques, Dr. David Marques and Dr. Laurel Marques, Christine and Andrew Lyman, Matthew and Juliana Marques, Paul and Angela Marques, Ann Marie Krol, and Mary and David Vogel; 6 great nephews and a great niece, Matthew, Jonathan, Nathaniel, Benjamin, Lucas and Gwendolyn Marques, and Mason Vogel. She was also predeceased by her brother Manuel Marques.

Miss Marques’ family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday, June 25, 2015 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody. Her funeral will be held from the funeral home on Friday, June 26th at 8 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 50 Walsh Ave., Peabody. Memorial contributions may be made in Herminia’s memory to Our Lady of Fatima Church, 50 Walsh Ave., Peabody, MA 01960. Burial will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Salem.
