Plan to Convert Old Tannery Into Recreational Facility Finding Support

The current building at Lynnfield Street has been abandoned for years.

Support is building for a renovation project that would turn a decrepit old factory into a recreational facility for gymnasts, according to the Salem News.

The plan for the site, which is located off Lynnfield Street in South Peabody, has significant support among city councilors who are expected to vote on a special permit on Aug. 22 to allow the site to be used for recreational purposes.

“It’s just an old tannery, decrepit and overgrown,” City Council President Tom Gould told the Salem News. “And I think this is going to be a welcomed addition, a good opportunity.”

The council did postpone a hearing on the project last month due to unresolved issues at that time with the Conservation Commission and neighbors.
