Peabody Plans Citywide Rally for Racial Justice this Saturday
After original demonstration for Thursday rescheduled, new city-wide rally planned for Saturday, June 13 at 12:00pm in Emerson Park, Peabody

PEABODY, MA — On Sunday, May 31, 2020, Peabody resident Nicolas Blaisdell attempted to organize a rally to protest the murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin, as well as the systemic oppression of people of color in the United States whether it be by the police, the criminal justice system, or other institutional means.
According to the event’s Facebook page, after being contacted by the Peabody Police Department and warned about safety concerns, Blaisdell decided to reschedule his rally to work with Peabody Mayor Bettencourt to coordinate a larger city-wide remembrance event “for the life of George Floyd and for the need for racial justice in our country,” which will be happening this Saturday, June 13 at 12pm at Emerson Park in Peabody.

However, in the wake of the rescheduling of Blaisdell’s event, Peabody resident Heidy Salama organized another event in downtown Peabody on Friday, June 5, which drew a crowd of hundreds of people in Peabody Square. Salama’s rally was planned to be a peaceful demonstration in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement, Justice for George Floyd, and against police brutality.
