Peabody Police Don Pink Badges for Breast Cancer Awareness

Peabody officers spent a week with a pink band across their gold shields in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.

If you looked closely, you would have seen something slightly different about Peabody police officers' badges this past month -- a pink band going across them.

The department, in an effort to promote and recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, wore pink badge bands from Oct. 9-14.

Police Chief Robert Champagne said his department led the way in local law enforcement agencies joining forces with other organizations that participate in raising breast cancer awareness.

Statistics show that approximately 232,340 women will get breast cancer in 2013 and nearly 40,000 women will die this year from the disease. Education about breast cancer and early detection can go a long way to staying healthy.

“This type of support assists in spreading awareness of the disease and it is imperative to get the message out to the community,” said Champagne.

He credited the local effort to Peabody officer John Nelson and Sgt. David Bonfanti.
