Peabody Seeks Artists For Public Pianos Art Project

The city will pick four artists to paint different pianos and their benches as part of the project.

From The City of Peabody: The City of Peabody along with the Peabody Cultural Collaborative has designed a program involving music and visual art to inspire more community engagement and beautification in the downtown Peabody area. Four artists will be invited to paint different pianos and their benches as part of this project. The pianos will then be placed in strategic locations downtown and will be available for the public to play at will.

The City has partnered with the Peabody Cultural Collaborative and are working with ArcWorks Community Art Center, Peabody Access Telecommunications, Peabody Institute Library to bring this project to fruition. This program was started in part by a grant from the Peabody Local Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. Public Art Pianos is in conjunction with, but a separate part of, the Outside the Box mural initiative of the City of Peabody.

ARTIST STIPEND Artists will be awarded a $750 stipend for their work in painting the pianos.
Materials will not be provided for artists. Artists will receive the full amount of the stipend upon completion of the painting of their designated piano. Completion of the project must be verified by the Public Art Pianos Review Committee before funds are disbursed.

ELIGIBILITY The project is open to all artists that abide by the project guidelines. All artists and artists’ guardians must sign the “Artist Agreement” form to participate in the program. Artists may apply as an individual or as a group. For group submissions, a signed Artist Agreement for each participating artist must be included to the application form and design template.

SELECTION PROCESS Submissions will be reviewed by the Public Art Pianos Review Committee consisting of key members of project partners. Once the artwork is selected the artist(s) will be notified via phone or email.
