Peabody Warns Of Traffic Delays As Utility Work Gets Underway

Crews started work on replacing underground gas lines on a busy Peabody Street this week.

PEABODY, MA — Traffic on Lowell Street in Peabody could be limited to one lane as crews work to replace underground gas lines. The work is being performed on the stretch of Lowell Street from Route 1 to Route 128. Work will be conducted from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Weekdays.

"Expect delays and possible detours. Lowell Street may be down to one lane traffic," Peabody police said in a Facebook post as the work got underway Monday morning. "Expect delays. Seek alternate route."

In November, Peabody Mayor Ted Bettencourt blasted National Grid for missing a deadline to complete utility work on another section of Lowell Street. That delay, Bettencourt said, means the city will not be able to repave the road until this year.
