Peabody Woman Killed In Route 1 Crash

PEABODY, MA —Police released the identities of two people killed in a head-on crash in Route 1 in Saugus Saturday morning. Evelyn Pinto, 48, of Peabody, was riding in a 2018 Dodge Journey sport utility vehicle driven by a 51-year-old Peabody man on the north side of the highway when it was hit by Chevrolet Impala driven by Luis Gallego, 29, of Lynn. Gallego was driving on the wrong side of the highway at the time.

Gallego was pronounced dead at the scene. Pinto was taken to Melrose-Wakefield Hospital where she was pronounced dead. The man driving the car Pinto was riding in was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital with serious injuries.

Police received reports of a wrong-way driver and then calls about the accident around 3:30 a.m. Saturday. Gallego hit a box truck before hitting the Dodge Journey. The driver of the box truck was not injured.
