Popular Peabody BBQ Joint Abruptly Closes

Some fans had held out hope that Hoppy's would reopen, but those hopes seem to have been dashed by a "For Rent" sign.

PEABODY, MA -- Hoppy's Barbecue, which announced it was "indefinitely closing" in march, now appears to be permanently closed. John Hopping had gotten into the restaurant business in a nontraditional fashion: he started hosting an annual pig roast in 2000, which led to a catering business, which led to the opening of the Forest Street restaurant.

While the March 1 Facebook message said the restaurant was "indefinitely closed" gave some fans hope that it would eventually reopen, a "for rent" sign that appeared in the restaurant's Forest Street location last week dashed those hopes. Hopping could not immediately be reached for comment, but the Facebook message did say he still planned to take catering orders.
