PEABODY, MA — Breanna Benoit set an ambitious long-term goal for herself on the track.

A year later, the Bishop Fenwick senior from Salem achieved it.

That determination helped her be named one of 15 finalists in the Positive Coaching Alliance's Triple-Impact Competitor Scholarship Program.

As part of the "Kids Need Sports" initiative the 15 student-athletes from throughout New England were chosen as finalists based on having "demonstrated that what they have learned playing sports applies in the classroom and in life, and is helping them get through the pandemic and the challenges they face every days."

Benoit, who has also competed in volleyball, dance and competitive cheer, said she credits playing sports with teaching her that determination. She said she and Fenwick coach Jocelyn Almy-Testa developed a year-long goal of her being named Most Valuable Player of a meet.

She then achieved it "through a combination of persistence, drive and dedication."

The PCA said: "No only does Breanna strive for personal excellence, her teammates report how she fuels their performance with positivity and is gracious in victory and in defeat, congratulating teammates and opponents alike."

The four scholarship recipients out of the 15 finalists will be announced later this fall.
