#6 Plymouth South Loses to #3 Dighton-Rehoboth In Softball, 5-1

The great defense by Dighton-Rehoboth kept Plymouth South on one run and helps them win in the Quarterfinals.

PLYMOUTH, MA- The #6 Plymouth South Panthers traveled to Dighton-Rehoboth High School to face the #3 Falcons in the MIAA Division 2 Softball South Sectional Tournament Quarterfinals. Plymouth South defeated Canton in Round 1 on Monday, and the Falcons defeated #14 Dedham on Monday.

On the mound for Plymouth South Amaelia Freitas and for Dighton-Rehoboth Eliana Raposo. Both pitchers did not allow any runs in the first three innings as Raposo struck out five batters for these innings and Plymouth South had solid defense as center fielder Ashley MacPhail made a stretching catch in the third inning.

At the top of the fourth inning, MacPhail walked, got to third on an error and wild pitch, and then scored on a RBI double by Freshman Cather Lauren Trostel to make it 1-0. However, in the bottom of the inning, the Falcons got two runs in on four singles to take the lead at 2-1. The pitcher Raposo brought in one of the runs via a RBI single in the inning.

In the fifth inning, Plymouth South missed an opportunity to tie the game when it was bases loaded and all the runners on base were stranded. It started with a single by Emily Irwin and walks to Alyssa Briggs and MacPhail.

In the sixth inning, the Falcons got 2 runners on base but Briggs got all three out and stranded the 2 runners on base. The Falcons relief pitcher Nicole Corey would strike out the side against Plymouth South keeping them from tying the game again.

In the seventh inning, the Falcons drove in three runs to seal the win, Caliegh Cloonan got an infield hit and drove in Madelyn Kelley. Next, Emily Marcotte hit an infield single off of Frietas and drove in another run. Then, Lacy Latour brought in a run by a groundout. Riley Gonsalves grounded out to end the inning.

The winning pitcher was credited to Raposo who allowed four hits, walked three batters and struck out 10 in the game.

Dighton-Rehoboth will face #7 Greater New Bedford in the Semifinals tomorrow at 4 p.m.
