Blizzard Causes Flooding Across MA

Roads all over coastal Massachusetts flooded during high tide Monday morning; more flooding is possible Monday night.

Coastal Massachusetts was hit with a double whammy Monday morning—blizzard conditions plus flooding.

High tide Monday came at probably the worst time—about 11 a.m., when the blizzard started to intensify.

Nantucket appeared to get the worst of it, as roads across the island flooded.

Plymouth and Hingham also saw flooding.



And in the Boston region, flooding was reported in Dorchester, Revere, Lynn, and Swampscott, among other areas.




The blizzard dropped about 10 inches of snow on parts of the state by Monday afternoon.

More flooding is likely Monday night during the next high tide, which is set for about 11 p.m.

The National Weather Service issued a coast flood advisory through Tuesday at 2 a.m.:

  • A COASTAL FLOOD ADVISORY...IS IN EFFECT FROM 10 PM THIS EVENING TO 2 AM EST TUESDAY.
  • LOCATIONS...PLYMOUTH COUNTY COAST FROM HULL TO PLYMOUTH. NORTH AND EAST FACING SHORELINES OF CAPE COD. NORTH AND EAST COASTS OF NANTUCKET INCLUDING NANTUCKET HARBOR.
  • TIMING...WITHIN AN HOUR OR TWO OF THE HIGH TIDE AROUND MIDNIGHT OR BETWEEN 10 PM AND 2 AM.
  • IMPACTS...SOME VULNERABLE SHORE ROADS WILL LIKELY BE FLOODED...PERHAPS UP TO A FOOT DEEP. SHORELINES EXPOSED TO THE OPEN OCEAN MAY EXPERIENCE CONSIDERABLE SPLASHOVER FROM LEFTOVER SWELLS. THERE WILL BE SOME CONTINUED BEACH EROSION...ESPECIALLY ALONG OUTER CAPE COD AND THE EAST SIDE OF NANTUCKET.
