Brockton Man Charged In Route 3 Crash That Killed Quincy Woman

PEMBROKE, MA — A Brockton man has been charged with manslaughter, felony motor vehicle homicide and driving under the influence of drugs in connection with a crash that killed an 87-year-old Quincy woman and shut down Route 3 in Pembroke on July 19.

The Plymouth County District Attorney's Office said Randy Campbell, 33, was charged with manslaughter by motor vehicle, felony motor vehicle homicide, operating under the influence of drugs causing injury, speeding and operating to endanger.

The DA's Office said Campbell was arraigned at his bed at South Shore Hospital on Monday.

The victim of the crash was 87-year-old Nancy Chamberlin, of Quincy.

Chamberlin died and several others were injured in the chain-reaction crashes July 19 about 9:30 a.m. Police said Chamberlin crashed in the northbound lanes near exit 12 and was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Massachusetts State Police said the initial crash triggered several smaller crashes, and four people ended up going to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. Route 3 northbound was closed for about three hours, causing a miles-long backup.

The DA's Office said a preliminary investigation determined that the suspect driving a Hyundai Elantra was speeding when it rear-ended with the Volkswagen Tiguan, of which Chamberlin was a passenger.

The DA's Office said witnesses said the impact of the collision forced the Tiguan into a collision with a Chrysler Town and County minivan, and then off the highway into a tree. Witnesses said the suspect's vehicle also hit the minivan, causing the minivan to strike a F150 Ford pickup truck.

Campbell remains at South Shore Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the crashes. He was scheduled to appear via video call in Plymouth District Court on Monday.
