Five Things You Need to Know Today: May 9

Looking for something special to do for your mom for Mother's Day? We've got some ideas here.

1. Looking for something special to do for your mom for Mother's Day? Buy her some potted flowers at the County Farm, which opens Saturday. The greenhouses are overflowing  with more than 75,000 annuals, perennials, herbs and vegetables available in time for Mother's Day.

2. Enter a photo in our weekly contest and you could win a gift card. This week's theme is "mothers and daughters," so post your favorite picture of you with your mom here.

3. Savor a scrumptious English tea and immerse yourself in Jane Austen’s world during a special tour of the Hedge House Museum, 126 Water Street in Plymouth, MA. Mothers and daughters are invited to enjoy this special experience on the Saturday of Mother’s Day weekend. Elegantly costumed guides converse about the characters and customs depicted in Austen’s novels, and share insights about the day-to-day lives of Americans during the Regency period. A costumed milliner offers creative tips on making period-style bonnets using ordinary modern materials such as placemats. Tea treats include homemade cakes and goodies prepared from authentic recipes of Plymouth families preserved in the Antiquarian Society’s collection. Weather permitting, tea will be served in the handsomely restored Colonial Revival garden courtyard, but the event will be held rain or shine. Costumes are welcome. Tickets are $15.
