Hikes, Walks and Safaris at Myles Standish State Forest

Myles Standish State Forest and Scusset Beach State Reservation offer tons of family activities. Here are a few (free) programs today and this week.

1. From  from 10-11:30 a.m. at Myles Standish: Come along on a leisurely and informative bike ride. We will follow the bike trail within the forest and learn about the history of MSSF and the work the Civilian Conservation Corps did here.  We’ll also learn about the natural history and stop at some spots with good photo opportunities. Program is for adults and children 10+; younger children in carriers, with a helmet, are welcome.  All participants must have their own bike and wear a bike helmet (no exceptions!), and bring water.  Meet at Interpretive Center next to Headquarters.

2. From 10-11:30 a.m at Scusset Beach: Search for park wildlife.  Learn how to use a plankton net and binoculars.  Find out where to look for birds, insects, and signs of wildlife.   Meet at the Fish Pier. 

3. From 2-3 p.m. at Myles Standish: You don’t need to travel the world to discover and observe a tremendous diversity of insect life.  Our fields, wetlands, and forests hold a treasure trove of insects.  We’ll explore Myles Standish State Forest’s varied habitats in search of all manner of insects.  Meet at Interpretive Center next to Headquarters. 

4. From 3-4 p.m. at Scusset Beach: Learn about the clams, snails and other creatures that live right here at Scusset Beach.  View some live animals and other natural history artifacts. Look for the table set up at  the end of Scusset Beach boardwalk. All programs are free and open to the public.  There is a $7 parking fee for most programs.  Bring water, wear sunscreen/bug spray, dress in layers, and wear good footwear. An adult must accompany children.  Rain cancels. Scusset Beach State Reservation is located at the end of Scusset Beach Road in Sandwich. For more information call (508) 888-0859 or visit www.mass.gov/dcr.  

5. Friday, from 10-11:30 a.m. at Scusset Beach: The hill overlooking Scusset Marsh has a rich history from Indian Council ground to golf course to a World War II gun battery. Explore the rich cultural & natural history of this area on this 1.1 mile roundtrip walk. The view from the top of the hill includes a breath-taking vista of Cape Cod Bay. Co-sponsored by the Army Corps of Engineers. Meet at the Scusset Fish Pier parking lot.
