Lobster and Strawberry Festival at Christ Church

It's the start of the last month of summer, here's five things you ought to know about this weekend.

1. Christ Church, located at 149 Court St., will hold its first lobster and strawberry festival, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 2 and 3. The event, hosted by the Evening Women’s Group of Christ Church Parish, will be held at the church in Plymouth and will feature homemade strawberry shortcake ($5) and lobster rolls ($13) prepared with the best parts of the lobster: claws and knuckles. In addition, there will be clam chowder, hot dogs and chicken salad for sale, a book table featuring “summer reads,” a baked goods and fresh produce table, gift baskets for sale and chances to win a giant raffle basket filled with an array of summer-time fun themed items which includes a handmade picnic table. For more information about the event, contact Kim Corners at 508-888-3168 or kimmsue1@aol.com.

2. American Legion Post 40 hosts Karaoke Night every Friday at 8 p.m. The post is located at 199 Federal Furnace Road.

3. The Independence Mall is teaming up with the American Red Cross to host a blood drive from noon to 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2.

The need for blood never diminishes. Every day, the Northeast Division must collect 2,000 units of blood just to meet the basic needs of patients across New England. The difference a donor makes in the life of a patient is something that simply cannot be overstated. Blood can be used for patients undergoing many surgical procedures, organ transplants, trauma and chemotherapy. For some patients, such as the victim of an automobile accident, the need for blood is sudden. For others, ongoing transfusions are needed to sustain lifesaving medical treatment.

Call 800-Red Cross or visit www.redcrossblood.org to make an appointment to donate.

All proceeds go to the Jimmy Fund, which supports adult and pediatric patient care and cancer research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

5. The Y Mile Run, the third annual Plymouth YMCA one-mile run/walk for families and kids, will start at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, at Stephens Field in Plymouth and will finish at Nelson Park.
